Free-of-charge 20-hour early childhood education trial for 5-year-old children
Five-year-old children born in 2013 will be provided with free-of-charge early childhood education in Turku as part of a trial programme for the entire year running from 1 August 2018 to 31 July 2019.

Upper Comprehensive Schools in Turku to Begin Distance Teaching, Shutdown Restrictions Will Affect Services
The City of Turku complies with the decisions made by the Regional State Administrative Agency for Southern Finland on 4 March regarding shutdown due to coronavirus. The decisions apply to grades 7 to 9 of upper comprehensive schools in Turku and these will switch to distance teaching. Also free time services and public facilities will be affected.

Changes in the school and student health care coronavirus helpline service as of 1 March 2021
As of 1 March 2021, the school and student health care coronavirus helpline will only serve comprehensive school students. Upper secondary school students and vocational school students may use the centralised student health care appointment booking number: 02 266 1570. Omaolo service offers you an opportunity to get tested.

Team from Turku Selected as Winner of the Beyond 2030 Challenge Science Competition
The winning team of the Beyond 2030 Challenge science competition organised by the City of Turku and Bayer Nordic is Voittamattomat (“the Invincibles”) from Turun Suomalaisen Yhteiskoulun lukio (Turun Suomalainen Yhteiskoulu Upper Secondary School). The winners were awarded in the award gala organised on 14 January.

Procurement of the Turku International School was suspended – the school’s future location may after all be Itäharju
Due to the city’s current economic situation and the higher than expected costs connected to the procurement, the City Board of Turku has decided to suspend the procurement of the International School, which was planned to be established at the Sirkkala barracks. The City Board made the decision in its meeting on 9 November.

In Turku, Infections Spread Particularly within Families and Circles of Close Acquaintances
The coronavirus situation in Turku has taken a turn for the worse. Coronavirus infections have been detected in schools and educational institutions and several classes and entire schools have been ordered into quarantine.

The Beyond 2030 Challenge science competition has proceeded to the project phase, The Competition Introduces Future Makers for the Fields of Technology and Natural Sciences
The Beyond 2030 Challenge science competition organised by the City of Turku and Bayer has proceeded to the project phase. The competition began in August and 41 teams registered by the deadline with their project ideas. The jury selected 24 best projects to proceed to the actual project phase. The competition raised interest both in vocational education and in upper secondary education.

Recommendation to Use a Face Mask in Institutions of Upper Secondary Education and Higher Education in Turku
On 2 October, the regional working group for coronavirus prevention led by the Hospital District of Southwest Finland decided in their meeting to issue new recommendations for Southwest Finland, as the coronavirus epidemic is accelerating in Turku, Raisio, Kaarina and Lieto.
